Fine Vintage Portuguese Needlepoint Carpet
About the Item
Portugal is home to one of Europe’s most longstanding and prestigious weaving traditions, serving as a center for the production of high-value, intricately designed carpets since at least the 15th century, supposedly originally introduced to the country by the Moors, during the period of Muslim rule in the Iberian peninsula. Among Portugal’s textiles, perhaps none are as widely sought after as its needlepoint rugs – termed Arraiolos carpets – such as this vintage example, finely handwoven some time in the last 30 years.
It features a series of scrolling floral and vegetal motifs, in various delicate tones of green, with lavender, red ochre and cobalt blue accents, over an ivory ground, framed by a wide two-part border, borrowing from the characteristic designs of earlier 19th Century needlepoint works
A wonderful piece, in excellent condition, which would make a fine addition to a tasteful interior.
