About the Item

A rare and highly unusual pair of Modernist Indian rugs characterized by a chequerboard design background in red and rose onto which is laid an all-over repeat pattern composed of a bouquet of roses in different colours. The ivory and black chequerboard design border imparts a strong geometric identity to the composition. Both rugs are quite finely knotted with beautiful soft wool. The pair is nearly identical in size: one measures 293 x 200 cm (9 feet 6 inches x 6 feet 6 inches) and the other measures 303 x 200 cm (9 feet 9 inches x 6 feet 6 inches).

Antique Geometric Design Chinese Rug with Polychrome Diamonds
Located in Milan, IT
There is a group of later Chinese carpets which are characterized by geometric, often abstract patterns that seem inspired by Western sensibilities. What is puzzling however is that most of these weavings have been sourced in recent years in China itself, where they have been used in households ever since they were made. Whatever its origin, the resulting pattern of coloured lozenges has an outstanding three dimensional quality, and can be compared to the most important objects of twentieth century design.
