Antique Azilal Moroccan Rug in Brown with Beige Lozenge Pattern from Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool circa 1920-1930, this 3x5 antique Moroccan rug is believed to hail from the Azilal tribe. On the Design: This piece enjoys a rich brown background with a beige lattice pattern, or “lozenge” diamonds, as they’re known in the Berber tradition. Keen eyes will further admire warm red and pink accents, particularly in the border, though also within the field. These color variations play fabulously with the textural look inherent to this primitivist weaving style and its rich, personal look. Overall it’s an exemplary work among tribal rugs from Morocco found today—known for their archaic beauty and playful demeanor. Condition: This Azilal runner further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

Vintage Moroccan Blue Kilim Rug with Geometric Border and Two Diamond Lozenges
Located in Morristown, NJ
Antique early 20th century Moroccan Kilim rug, with two central diamond medallions, made in simple flat-woven or tapestry technique, in which the pattern is produced by horizontal wefts that cover the vertical warps. The ground is a denim blue color with browns, greens, beiges, pinks and blues woven into the border decoration and diamond medallions. The desire for the ‘exotic’ rug family in Western culture played no small part in the entrance of Moroccan style to the world stage and the gradual western influence on the style we see today. Given their thinner, supple structure, Kilim rugs are usable not only as decorative floor covering, but also as wall hangings and on furniture or bed coverlets...
