Vintage Moroccan Beni Ourain Beige Wool Floor Rug
About the Item
This vintage handwoven Moroccan Berber Beni Ourain area rug features a simple deep charcoal and brown line diamond lattice pattern on a cream field. The thick wool pile is soft and supple and the rug is finished with a natural wool warp fringe to one end. The neutral colors and minimalist and timeless design will complement any contemporary style of decor, from mid century modern to boho to global.
Handcrafted by women artisans from the Middle Atlas Mountain region of Morocco, Beni Ourain rugs were traditionally used as bedding to keep warm in the cold winter months. They are handwoven from undyed, natural wool and feature a characteristic ivory or cream field with a simple geometric diamond pattern line design in henna-like brown or black, which is woven from undyed wool from black sheep. The asymmetry and subtle variations in line thickness make each Beni Ourain rug one-of-a-kind. Their neutral tones and elegant minimalist design made them a favorite of mid-century modernist designers such as Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. Inherently organic and eco-friendly, they continue to be popular today.
