About the Item
This piece is a Grenfell 1 feet in diamater hooked mat (or silk embroidery mat) — a handmade textile from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, produced by the Grenfell Mission in the early to mid-20th century. The fine silk or rayon threads, tight weave, and naïve pictorial style (the woman in regional dress, simple houses, and stylized landscape) are hallmarks of the Grenfell Mission mats.
These were made by local women under the direction of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell’s Mission to the Deep Sea Fishermen starting around 1906–1960s. While many were made with silk from recycled stockings (“silk stockings mats”), this one appears to be stitched or woven with silk floss on burlap or linen backing — a known variation.
The round shape is less common but documented; it might have been a chair seat cover or small decorative wall hanging.
The figure of a woman in bonnet and long dress fits Grenfell’s popular themes of rural life, community, and the North Atlantic environment. The muted pastel and earth tones are typical of early pieces (Likely 1920s–1940s)

The Grenfell Mission sold these mats to raise funds for hospitals and community projects in northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Each was handmade by women in remote communities, making them valuable examples of Canadian folk art and social history.
