About the Item

78982 Antique Red Persian Mahal Rug, 08'10 x 12'00. This exquisite hand-knotted wool antique Persian Mahal rug presents a stunning example of the blending of Sarouk and Mahal weaving traditions, renowned for their intricate floral patterns and fine craftsmanship. The deep red field serves as a vibrant backdrop, showcasing an elaborate floral design that captures the essence of Persian artistry. With a symmetrically arranged central medallion, the antique Mahal rug features delicate blooms and scrolling vines, meticulously rendered to convey a sense of elegance and balance, making it a true masterpiece of Persian weaving. The saturated red field of the Persian rug is adorned with a variety of floral motifs, including blooming palmettes, stylized lotus blossoms, intricate rosettes, stylized florals and foliage. These botanical elements symbolize prosperity, beauty, and the enduring connection between humanity and nature in Persian culture. The intertwining vines and floral blossoms are intricately connected, forming a harmonious botanical tableau that reflects the garden-inspired aesthetics often seen in Persian rug design. The rug’s detailed floral patterns speak to the weaver's exceptional skill and the deep cultural heritage of Persian artistry. The rich color palette further enhances the rug’s visual appeal. The dominant red field is beautifully contrasted by accents of deep navy, warm brown, and pink raspberry, adding a layer of depth and sophistication to the overall composition. The use of vibrant and bold colors not only highlights the intricacy of the floral motifs but also evokes a sense of warmth and luxury, making this Persian area rug an exceptional piece for adding timeless charm to any space. Framing the central field is a classic Herati border, characterized by a series of blooming palmettes, stylized flowers, and vines, creating a rhythmic, continuous design. The Herati border is flanked by dual meander guard borders, each adorned with smaller floral and geometric patterns. These elements enhance the rug’s structure, adding both complexity and harmony to the design. The combination of the finely knotted floral motifs and the structured border creates a captivating visual rhythm, making this Persian Mahal rug a perfect blend of artistry, cultural symbolism, and decorative beauty. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
