About the Item
78220 Vintage Persian Qum Rug, 03'08 x 05'03. Embark on a journey through the annals of Persian craftsmanship with this exquisite hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Qum rug. Rooted in a weaving tradition that traces its origins to the early 20th century, this opulent creation encapsulates the stately decadence and timeless allure that define the Qum style.
Woven in the historical city of Qum, just south of Tehran, this rug pays homage to a legacy that began to flourish in the 1930s when rug merchants from Kashan relocated their looms to the oasis of Qum. Inheriting designs from Kashan, Tabriz, Isfahan, and other weaving centers, this rug is a testament to the city's ability to assimilate various styles while retaining the distinct characteristics that identify it as a Qum masterpiece.
The rich red field serves as a vibrant canvas for an intricate floral design, a nod to the city's classical design repertory. A central medallion, anchored with small trefoil pendants, takes center stage, surrounded by an enchanting allover pattern of floral arrangements that saturate the red composition with timeless elegance.
The ornate floral border, adorned with intricate patterns, encases the rug, offering a visual feast that speaks to the sophistication of Qum craftsmanship. Paired with floral meander guard borders, this rug is a symphony of design, a reflection of the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes the Qum tradition.
As you gaze upon this vintage floral Qum rug, you not only witness its decadent beauty but also become part of a narrative that spans decades. The rug, with its sophisticated colors and traditional motifs, is more than a furnishing—it's a cultural artifact, a piece of history that invites you to elevate your space with a touch of timeless elegance. Embrace the heritage woven into each knot, and let this vintage Qum rug be the answer to your quest for elevated traditional furnishings.
Rendered in variegated shades of red, navy blue, beige, tan, sky blue, taupe, light green, brown, pink and dark green with other accent colors.

Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks.
In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
