19th Century Antique Bidjar Rug

About the Item

Bidjar – Northwest Persia This magnificent Bidjar gallery is impressive for its large size and vibrant design, which a master artist made with skilled hands. The navy-blue field is covered with an all-over design with diamonds, spicy mustard shades, and orange. Each diamond has rosettes surrounded by branches with leaves and colourful flowers. The diamonds are connected by flowering vines in the most diverse colours. The vibrant colours of this gallery remind the many spices traded along the famous Silk Road that passed through Persia. Made over 170 years ago, larger pieces, such as this one, were probably ordered by wealthy clients and the Persian nobility. Bidjar rugs are known for their long durability, a result of the quality of the wool. It is an attractive piece that will complement a formal or more casual room, making the perfect addition to your rug collection, home or office. With a high-quality level, this Bidjar gallery will remain lively for generations to come. The carpet is clean and ready for use. Bidjar, or Bijar, is a city in the Kurdistan region, in northwestern Persia, not far from Tabriz. The ancient carpets of Bidjar were produced by the Kurds, who received orders from the Persian rulers and nobility for their own use or to be given as gifts. Bidjar rugs are world-famous for their durability and palatial dimensions. They are durable because they are made with a very compact triple weave. All the knots are symmetrical, and as the weaver tied each row of knots, she added extra weft and beat the knots, causing them to become dense and compact. So, Bidjar rugs are very heavy concerning their size and bulkier. This extremely firm and heavy structure created greater strength and durability. For this reason, the ancient Bidjar carpets became known as “the iron carpets of Persia.” Their thickness and the way they are made can make them challenging to fold. However, this work results in them lasting more than 200 years, even under intense use. The rich variety of colours of antique Bidjar rugs, ranging from light green to emerald green, a full range of blue tones and a colour spectrum from yellow to fiery red, tomato red or deep terracotta, demonstrates the incredible skill of the dyers of Bidjar. The culmination of the best tradition of antique Bidjar rugs occurred around 1900. Pieces produced before this period are considered works of refined art. They have tribal elements in their design and colouring that are not found in any other rug made in the large centres of Persia. Collectors and lovers of carpet art highly respect antique Bidjars for their uniqueness, durability and significant decorative impact. They are commonly compatible with a wide range of traditional and contemporary decors.
