19th Century Antique Farahan Sarouk

About the Item

Farahan Sarouk – West Persia The creative use of space, choice of colours, and rare white gold shade create a unique version of this Farahan Sarouk rug. The bright field, highlighted by a subtle abrash (variation of shades), provides a shining backdrop for the dark indigo medallion and its graceful and winding branches. Brown and sparkling rust at the end of the carpet and borders provide a bright counterpoint to the lighter central field. The remarkable and spacious design begins in the centre, with branches holding open flower buttons and others still opening. Beautifully articulated, the flourishing branches introduce the variety of saturated natural colours for which this carpet style is known. The carpet is clean and ready for use. The Faraghan plain in the Arak and Sultanabad district of Persia, located between Tehran and Hamadan, is a very fertile agricultural centre and the home of Faraghan carpets. Despite their tradition, Faraghan rugs have a variety of floral styles similar to classical Persian rugs because they were produced for the Persian elite. The mixture of Tabriz medallions and the floral and palm tree patterns of Sarouk rugs resulted in designs that are majestic and, at the same time, simple and unique. Faraghan Sarouk Persian rugs were woven in the village of Sarouk, but these rugs were given the composite name “Faraghan Sarouk” as a distinction for their exceptional type of Sarouk. Antique Faraghan Sarouk rugs are notable for their ability to combine different qualities and sensibilities. The medallion's design is classically Persian, as are all its small details. However, it is a design that presents an exciting combination of curvilinear designs with geometric styles. Faraghan Sarouk rugs often come close to the angular designs of the Heriz and Serapi but on a much finer scale derived from the classical rug designs. This design delicacy is closely related to the Faraghan weaving technique, which is firm and refined. The colouring of Faraghan Sarouk rugs tends to be rich but also soft, emphasising terracotta reds, delicate blues, greens, pastel apricots, and yellows. Rugs with original designs woven before 1900, which are now increasingly difficult to find, are considered masterpieces of art. They are made of the best quality wool and have different colour and size options. The combination of these factors resulted in the availability of antique Persian rugs in high demand in Europe and the East Coast of the United States at the turn of the 19th century. Art lovers and renowned interior designers always look for the best antique Faraghan Sarouk rugs. Their unparalleled beauty, coupled with elite demand, has caused a steady increase in their market value. Genuine, antique Faraghan Sarouk rugs, especially in excellent condition, are admired and sought after but are increasingly rare. These are pieces for collectors of antique Persian rugs.
