19th Century Persian Kerman Lavar Pictorial “Tree of Life” Rug in Camel, Red

About the Item

A beautiful Persian Kerman Lavar pictorial area rug with the “Tree of Life” design from the 4th quarter of the 1800s. The main field is light tan or camel with a central cypress tree with a beautiful magenta color flanked by birds (parrots) and flowering vases beneath a curved arch. The top of the field contains spandrels in pale red or pink color. There are designs of two beautiful and colorful standing peacocks on either side of the base of the tree. There are three borders in red and camel color with meandering borders with flower design throughout. There is a display band in the back to enable using the rug as tapestry or wall art. Lavar is a village near the city of Kerman on the edge of the great desert in South East Persia. Lavar carpets are world-renowned for their beauty in design and colors used which this carpet well represents. There are several beautiful designs that are incorporated in this rug including a row of cypress trees on the lower part of the rug. Also the range of the colors in the design include green, gold, blue, and red. The corner spandrels on the upper section of the design are in a bright red color with floral design. The primary border is also in ivory color with flowers and tree designs throughout. The village of Kerman is located at the edge of the great desert in Persia and it is known for some of the most beautiful and colorful rugs that were woven in Persia. The weavers used the color and flower designs in rugs to bring some color and nature’s beauty to the dry desert environment that they lived in.
