About the Item

This Persian Meeshan Malayer carpet created circa 1880 consists of a hand-knotted pure handspun wool pile with cotton warp and thread and natural vegetable dyes. Historically, the Meeshan village is renowned for having created the finest carpets in the Malayer region. Its weaving technique, passed down through generations, uses an extremely Fine weft that allows the carpet to fold as easily as cloth and without any stiffness. While the majority of Malayer carpets exhibit a similar motif, Meeshan carpets vary in accordance with the artists who weave them. This piece is exceptional in its floral design, which is unique even compared to other carpets of its provenance. It is inspired by the blooming flowers of springtime, seen along the village's surrounding hillsides. Its beautiful gold tones, reds, pinks and greens are delicately balanced throughout the border and field. This carpet measures is 4'4" x 6'3" and it is in excellent antique condition.
