Antique 1890s Persian Haji Jalili Tabriz Rug, Medallion Design, 4' x 6'

About the Item

This 1890 Haji Jalili Persian Tabriz rug consists of a cotton warp, handspun wool weft and hand-knotted handspun wool pile. The bright copper hues, soft blues, indigos, cream and beige tones were all created using organic vegetable dyes. With its ornate central medallion and intricate border, it is truly a striking one-of-a-kind Haji Jalili carpet. Haji Jalili was one of the foremost designers-- arguably the foremost designer-- of the finest carpets produced in Iran circa 1880-1910. This rug is an exceptional example of a Haji Jalili carpet, particularly because of the high level of detail and ornamentation for a rug of its size. The design is rather sophisticated while still maintaining a casual feel, making it a versatile piece suitable for any room. The size is 4'4" x 6', and it is in great antique condition. Orley Shabahang takes pride in selecting and curating the finest vintage and antique carpets, ensuring that the preservation of this ancient art form will endure for generations to come.

It is an exceptionally Fine example from the master artist and weaver Haji Jalili, and was crafted using his own signature wool and dyes. While the coloration may look simple upon first glance, it actually consists of a complex combination of earth tones based on the rule of seven. That is, there are seven different shades of brown, seven of beige, seven of pale green, and so on. It is extremely challenging for a weaver to work with colors that are so similar and yet still be able to distinguish among them, especially while working with such fine woolen yarns. The resulting piece is one of amazing dimension and timeless beauty. The tree of life illustration, amid Cyprus...
