Antique 1910s Persian Sarouk Mohajeran Rug, Peacock Motif, 4x6

About the Item

Woven in Iran, this hand-knotted Sarouk carpet measures 4’ x 6’5” and belongs to the Antique Collection. Crafted using a traditional Persian weave, this antique Sarouk has a soft pile and a durable foundation. The carpet’s rich red background, along with its bright indigo, cream, green, and brown, are obtained by organic vegetable dyes. These dyes are still preferred today for their bright and fade-resistant qualities. Orley Shabahang takes pride in selecting and curating the finest vintage and antique carpets, ensuring that the preservation of this ancient art form will endure for generations to come.

  • Antique 1910s Persian Lilihan Rug, Pink and Blue, 3x6
    Located in New York, NY
This Antique Lilihan Hamadan wool carpet measures 3’3” x 6’5” and is hand knotted in warm shades of pink, indigo blue, copper orange, forest green, and cream wool. Inspired by a traditional Persian flower garden, the design showcases a central floral medallion with additional geometric motifs such as botehs, birds, butterflies, branches, and vines adorning the field and border. Three details regarding this antique Lilihan carpet are especially noteworthy. First, it incorporates multiple traditional Persian textile elements. These include the floral medallion, tree of life design, and circle of life theme among its flora, bird, and butterfly motifs. Second, the pattern in this carpet contains more geometry than most Lilihan designs, which typically depict more curvilinear motifs. Lastly, what truly makes this carpet so special is the presence of small crucifixes...

    Located in New York, NY
This Persian Qashqai carpet circa 1940 was created using a wool warp, wool weft, hand-knotted pure wool pile and natural vegetable dyes. The central lion design is rather striking in the way it contrasts the carpet's red field, as well as in its detailed facial features. In Persian folklore, the lion symbolizes kingship, prestige, and the protection of sacred spaces. Its power is beautifully conveyed by the weaver of this piece, who created this carpet for ceremonious purpose. Taking a closer look at the border, one can see Qashqai villagers dancing in celebratory robes, indicating that this was likely woven as a wedding carpet...
