About the Item

This rare and unusually long Baluch sofreh runner was woven in the mid-19th century in the border regions of eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. Likely created for ceremonial or dowry use, this piece blends the quiet elegance of a traditional sofreh—used for bread serving or food preparation—with the elongated proportions of a true gallery runner. The deep red field is sparsely decorated with lozenge medallions and subtle tribal motifs, framed by a pair of wide floral borders in ivory and dark green. Zigzag and chevron kilim ends complete the piece with understated tribal refinement. Handwoven in wool on a wool foundation, the rug is in nice antique condition, with soft pile wear, abrash, and minor repairs consistent with its age and use. Its minimalist field and rhythmic borders give it an almost modern aesthetic, while retaining the warmth and soul of its nomadic roots. This is a perfect piece for a long hallway, entryway, or even layered along the side of a bed. It would also be stunning hung as a vertical textile on a tall wall, bringing both color and cultural depth to the space. This rug comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer based in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for curating fine Persian and Oriental carpets over several decades. some minor fading
