About the Item

Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1920-1930 from Persia, this 1x2 antique Persian Baluch rug is a bold new addition to the Rug & Kilim Collection, featuring all over geometric tribal patterns on a navy blue field. On the Design: This antique Baluch rug exhibits classic tribal abstraction, with an organic linear pattern emerging in chocolate brown against an indigo field. The border features a distinctive dotted chain motif characteristic of Baluch weaving traditions. Despite its distressed condition, the piece demonstrates the sophisticated color relationships typical of 19th-century Baluch work, where natural dyes have aged into subtle variations of midnight blue and umber. The design’s flowing lines create dynamic movement across the field, showcasing the improvisational design approach common in Baluch tribal weaving. Keen eyes for detail shall appreciate that sometimes small pieces like these were textiles—the faces of pillows, salt bags. Admirers of the craft will appreciate this as an extremely collectible piece of its period, like few special pieces with such a personal, intentional look and finesse of any antique, let alone a gift-sized rug. Overall the attention to detail in scale, texture and movement of color is matched only by its equally rare condition. Condition: This antique Persian Baluch rug further enjoys an overall good condition for its age and origin—an impressive find among Oriental rugs of a celebrated weaving tradition.
