About the Item

An early 20th century Persian Bidjar featuring multiple intrinsic abrashes from somber shades of charcoal and grey to numerous tone-on-tone blues. The large allover quatrefoil floral design utilizes a palette of rusts, madder red, and golden yellows. The smaller angular and rectilinear patterns pertain to the history of Bidjar carpets known as tribal town and village rugs. Town and village rugs are woven by a single person or small group versus large professional workshops with guides to follow knot-by-knot on grid paper. A highly difficult form, Bidjars were mainly created by eye or using wagireh sampler rugs. Because there is no detailed guide like that of rugs in workshops, it is much more difficult to create intrinsic and curvilinear designs and patterns. However, in return it showcases the expertise of these weavers and the historical importance of these rugs for the villages success.
