Antique Persian Tehran Rug, Circa 1900

About the Item

Extremely fine hand knotted, this rug is made in Tehran. The modern capital of Iran, the city of Tehran does not hold a long tradition of carpet weaving. However some of the finest hand made carpets were made in private houses by weaver/artists from other rug making areas whom migrated to the big city. Design of Tehran rugs are curvilinear, resembling those made in Isfahan or Kashan during 19th and early 20th century. Delicate floral design tend to predominate. This rug as most Tehran carpets have a fine double cotton weft and knot is Persian. The weave is close and the wool quality is excellent. The design of this carpet is centuries old Mina Khani created in the Safavid era of 17th century. The dyes are all organic. No restorations whatsoever were found in this rug and otherwise is in excellent condition.
