Caucasian Baku museum curated handmade new rug
About the Item
This is an exceptional rug, brand new , and made under special circumstances . Let us tell you briefly the back story.
Modern day Azerbaijan with its many mountains and valleys, as in past centuries is a mosaic of different tribal peoples, isolated towns and villages with a centuries old tradition of fine weaving . Caucasian carpets as they are broadly referred to in the trade consist of at least 100 distinct styles, unique to specific villages, districts or regions. And each carpet is individual, no two are exactly alike . Caucasian carpets represent a high point in creative weaving and in quality and older examples are sought after by collectors.
As in Persia (Iran) modernization across the 2Oth century often, if not always, brought about a decline in quality of carpet design and weaving quality as compared with the increasingly rare productions of the 19th century which command high prices – and are very difficult to find in a perfect condition, suitable for reasonably heavy wear – they are collector’s items.
A small group of local enthusiasts aided by the government, and in liaison with the world famous ( amongst rug aficionados ) Azerbaijan carpet museum , Baku, sought out the finest remaining village weavers and dyers to create a small quantity of original new carpets of the highest quality following and reviving tradition and honouring it . We have acquired a small number of these pieces, which are accurate renditions of their village type, as to pattern language and colour , and handwoven to the very highest standards . These are each individual one-of-a-kind pieces . This is a limited, carefully curated series .
As we are collectors and dealers in 19th century and earlier Caucasian carpets , we found the purity of this pursuit to be compelling . What we noted , relevant for purchasers , is that the wool and weaving quality and density exceeds in many cases , that of the earlier productions of the 19th century: these are wonderfully strong carpets which will last 100 years , or more, with heavy wear . For this project only the finest available lanolin rich wool was selected . The weavers were carefully chosen from a range of village environments around the country .
Artistically , they dazzle. The colours achieve the desired mellowness of a well aged antique collectible , there is a fine hand woven quality seen in the designs and the fine hand work . Each of these rugs required between 9-12 months to weave on a hand loom .
Baku has been the centre of the esteemed Shirvan weaving tradition for centuries and its 19th century and early productions keenly sought after by collectors . This is a stunning and complex example , rich in imagery and detail and fully , precisely in the tradition which has made Both Baku and Shirvan famous for its 19th century and earlier productions . Baku carpets specifically exhibit a degree of Persian influence seen in this piece particularly in the large oval red medallions at centre –as well the complexity and grace within the design reflects Persian values. And yet it is wholly Caucasian in its use of the classic bird and animal symbols . The inner main border with the stately “ grill work “ framed medallions as an orderly and continuous motif is classic Shirvan, often seen in Baku carpets . The colour palette is wide and achieves the muted, mellow effect of an antique piece . The carpets size at nearly 10 feet in length make it suitable as a major showpiece in the home .
As with all of the one-off pieces in this museum curated small production ( which was not strictly a commercial venture , rather a concerted revival effort , an attempt to achieve the quality extant in the 19th century ) this rug , from our long experience more finely woven and denser than the majority of those created in the 19th century : it will last for generations ; it is authentically “ an antique of the future “ .
Antique Baku and Shirvan carpets routinely achieve prices well above that asked here though they are nearly always in considerably frailer condition .

Astonishing 19th Century Rare Afshar Tribal rug featured in famous book
Located in WYNNUM, QLD
Featured as an exemplar of Afshar tribal creativity in James Opie's notable book " Tribal Rugs " this extremely rare collector's piece was used in a lecture series we conducted on the possible albeit unexamined influence of tribal rugs on early 20th century European painting .
The Afshars during the 19th century were amongst the dominant five nomadic groups in Iran and unquestionably the most daringly creative, and probably the most prolific in weaving output . Though the vast majority of their carpets exhibit traditional , more angular tribal patterns, this example is an extraordinary tribute to one female weaver as designer . There seems no precedent for the remarkable move into mind bending forms which veer off from the norm , which make it a high collectible and unquestionable investment piece .
The achievement of two elements stand out : colour and design execution . The rich and varied natural dye colours are deep and powerful and include a range from the treasured eggplant , through a provocative orange , yellows ( saffron), pale peach, to three unusual blues and a rare rust brown . Green is also sensitively applied to the palette .
The design also represents a departure from all norms before or since amongst Afshar rugs . The central medallions have been altered to create an almost moving, slightly hallucinatory effect ; the graceful tumbling of coloured leaves or vines is singular in its presentation, graceful yet very much alive . Most interesting are the designs within the medallion which seem to be an evocation of the ancient Chinese dragon and phoenix symbols . This theory gains a bit more traction when you look at the upright shrine type figure rising up alongside the medallions - these appear Chinese , as well, in a semi- abstract way-- influences such as these had been travelling across thewide continent of Asia for millenia .
The borders are classic traditional Afshar , noted for their lovely re-creation of flower symbols , interlinking , and slightly irregular , showing the artistic seredipity of the artist/ weaver . The colours here too, particularly the blues and yellows are nothing short of spectacular .
The amount of detailled hand work suggests that this piece would have required at least two years work on a ground loom- a humbling thought in thinking about the nomadic life in the 19th century.
This rug is of a size and of such a beauty that in the right open modern decor, it could well occupy a wall space of distinction, as would a modern art canvas...
