About the Item

Oversized Antique Persian Kirman Rug Size: 14'8" × 18'9" (447 × 571 cm) This majestic oversized antique Kirman rug, woven in Persia circa 1900, exemplifies the refined artistic tradition and superb craftsmanship for which the region of Kerman is so highly regarded. A regal and delicately composed piece, it reveals the poetic intricacy and decorative mastery that flourished under the influence of Persian court aesthetics in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rug’s field is an elaborate yet elegant tapestry of arching boteh motifs, floral palmettes, and delicate vinery, all rhythmically arranged in soft, vertically cascading rows. These botanical elements—particularly the repeated fan-shaped floral sprays—suggest the stylized gardens of paradise, a recurring theme in Persian art. While structured in layout, the design avoids rigidity, instead embracing a lyrical flow that gives the entire composition a sense of visual music. The color palette is rich in earthiness yet subtle in tone. Shades of beige, faded ochre, and dusty rose are underpinned by muted slate blues and soft greys, offering an aged, harmonious patina that evokes timeless elegance. The natural abrash (intentional or time-worn tonal variations in the wool) adds an organic texture to the surface, enhancing the visual depth. A wide triple-border system frames the central field, with the primary border featuring scrolling floral tendrils and stylized lotus blossoms, set against a contrasting background that provides balance and definition to the overall design. Rugs from Kirman (Kerman) were historically some of the most sought-after Persian weavings, prized for their fine knot density, sophisticated motifs, and harmonious color stories. This particular piece reflects the high aesthetic standards associated with late Qajar-period production—crafted not only as functional textiles but as expressions of refined artistic sensibility. Kirman rugs often drew on Persian poetry, garden architecture, and spiritual symbolism, making them prized both in Iranian culture and among international collectors and patrons during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This rug, with its oversized proportions, was likely custom-woven for a grand interior—perhaps a palace or a stately home—and retains all the grace and gravitas such origins imply. Elegant in form, serene in color, and monumental in scale, this antique Kirman carpet offers the perfect union of Persian artistry and textile mastery. A piece that speaks of history, heritage, and timeless beauty, it is well suited for formal salons, libraries, galleries, or luxurious contemporary settings that appreciate antique textile art at its finest. This exquisite antique rug, sourced from Doris Leslie Blau, showcases a rare blend of history and craftsmanship. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.

Vintage Persian Kirman Rug 5'1 x 8'10
Located in New York, NY
Vintage Persian Kirman rug. Size: 5'1 x 8'10. This attractive and tonally muted Kirman from southeast Persia was woven when densely covered grounds were particularly popular. The field color is a soft light teal with accents of dark brown, old gold, ivory and light green. The main border is equally filled with flowering vines and other elements repeating those of the field. Almost randomly, motives outlined in dark brown seem to drift in and out of focus. The all-over pattern has rosettes, leaves and layers of vines. The color variation or abrash is fairly subtle and is not the usual horizontal band variety, all too obvious in carpets with diverse dye lots. The soft, almost feminine palette makes this rug ideal for a boudoir, dressing room or bed chamber...
