About the Item

An absolutely stunning and quite large room size Persian Heriz, this very fine carpet was woven during the first years of the 20th Century and exhibits the sturdy and rugged knotting that has allowed the rug to survive in overall excellent condition one hundred years later. The red ground has a distinct warmness to it, the chaotic and yet symmetrical spurl of acanthus and vines a mixture of tans, navy blues, sea blues, pink and teals around a large angular central medallion that frames an eight-pointed central motif of nearly orange warmth. The cream spandrels are speckled with teal with veins of pink and blue. Thin floral borders on a cream ground flank the large repeating herati field of the primary border, this a remarkably complex and active edge. The carpet is a picture of complex geometry, a patient product of countless invested hours and a remarkably beautiful result. It has worn very well, the pile low and fully revealing the stark angularity of the carpet while still remaining full of color and strength. It is a Heriz, a product of the Heris region of Iran, but borrows a color pallette from the less busy Serapi carpets. This is a very fine authentic Persian carpet that will certainly set your room apart in a most magnificient way. Measurements: 150 1/2” L x 117” W Condition Report: Some selvedge wear and threading with areas of exposed interior cording; it is possible the selvedge is a later binding or perhaps is just well cared for. Pile is worn throughout in a very attractive manner, some weft/warp structure showing through in several areas throughout. Fringes are original on either end with an added weave of black wool for strength on both ends. We have not had the carpet professionally cleaned and colors would likely be more vibrant and discolorations minimized if this were done. The surface appears to be free of any stains, having the typical discolorations expected with age and use. The carpet appears to be free of any repairs or restorations (other than noted). Overall remaining in very good condition, sturdy and strong with a pliable structure and wonderful color preservation throughout.
