Hand-Woven Wool Sultanabad Rug Circa Late 19th Century

About the Item

This traditional handwoven Persian Sultanabad rug has a warm cream field of regal palmette pendants checkered with further floral lozenges, and geometric motif, in a refined indigo palmette border, between a profusion of ornate floral vine and geometric stripes. The city of Sultanabad (now known as Arak) was founded in the early 1800s as a center for rug production in Iran. During the late 19th Century, the firm of Ziegler and Co. established a manufactory in Arak/Sultanabad in order to produce rugs to meet demand in the West. Many of the rugs woven by Ziegler and Co. feature more updated colors and larger scale patterns. Sultanabad rugs tend to have a larger, supple weave and often exhibit a bolder large scale design. Sultanabad rugs are made in a myriad of colors and can easily find a place in any home.
