Late 19th Century Hand-Woven Persian Sultanabad Rug

About the Item

The shaded malachite field with a central column of brick-red and burnt-orange palmettes surrounded by ivory open floral cartouches, stylized linked vase motifs and minor further floral motifs, the broad ivory border with polychrome finely drawn cusped open lozenges alternating with sea-blue and polychrome angular floral motifs, linked by delicate leafy and floral vine between terracotta-red, ivory ribbon and angular floral vine stripes, inner zig-zag stripe. The city of Sultanabad (now known as Arak) was founded in the early 1800s as a center for rug production in Iran. During the late 19th Century, the firm of Ziegler and Co. established a manufactory in Arak/Sultanabad in order to produce rugs to meet demand in the West. Many of the rugs woven by Ziegler and Co. feature more updated colors and larger scale patterns. Sultanabad rugs tend to have a larger, supple weave and often exhibit a bolder large scale design. Sultanabad rugs are made in a myriad of colors and can easily find a place in any home.
