About the Item

This is an exceptional NW Persian city carpet from the Great Persian Carpet Revival period, from an accomplished workshop very much in the "Hajji Jalili" manner. The basic motif is the boteh or paisley, repeated around the sides of the field as an implicit border, tripled on the corners and also tripled as pendants from the gently scalloped round pink medallion with small floral projections. The field is a particularly desirable straw color, transitioning nicely to the slightly lighter sandy straw of the implicit border. The actual main border, with its slight abrash, is also in the sand/straw continuum and sports rosettes circled by floral wreaths alternating with veined, curved lancet leaves. The weave is particularly neat and uniform, with about 225 knots per square inch,. The pile is short, uniformly clipped and briskly resilient. The "Hajji Jalili" period ran from about 1880 to just after 1900. A few carpets are actually signed by the eponymous master weaver, but the name has been given to high-quality antique Tabriz carpets such as this one. Most pieces of this type have rust fields and one with a light, straw field is indeed a rarity.
