About the Item

Masterful Isfahan Carpet, Cork Wool with Silk, circa 1960-1970s "The Isfahan is the noble classic among Persian oriental carpets. It is particularly fine. It often takes a year or more to complete a carpet. Isfahan patterns vary greatly. Floral motifs are typical. Four-dimensional or longitudinally symmetrical designs with a medallion in the center, surrounded by arabesques, blossoms, or birds, are common. With usually more than 15 shades, the Isfahan is exceptionally colorful. The pile is made of cork wool with varying proportions of silk. Cork wool is a particularly fine-threaded, silky, and high-quality virgin wool. The backing is made of cotton or silk." This Isfahan carpet is the result of traditional and superior knotting techniques. It was masterfully crafted and adorned with fascinating ornamentation. The Persian carpet was hand-knotted from the finest yarn in Isfahan, arguably the most beautiful city in Iran. Isfahan carpets are among the most valuable Persian carpets and can be a real investment. Traditionally hand-knotted carpets still represent the highest quality standard among all carpet types. Depending on the knot type, the carpets are extremely robust and can last for generations. The finer and tighter a carpet is knotted, the more detailed ornaments and patterns can be displayed in the pile. At the same time, a very fine oriental carpet requires significantly more manual effort, as well as a higher level of experience and skill on the part of the weaver. Thus, knot density also serves as a key value factor for hand-knotted carpets. The quality is not directly related to knot density. A coarser carpet may well be manufactured to an excellent standard.
