About the Item

Mohajeran Sarouk Rug, Early 20th Century Balancing large-scale design with intricate drawing, this elegant Mohajeran Sarouk replicates the elegance of fine nineteenth-century Persian textiles in thick lustrous wool pile. Against a classic indigo field, large leaves and palmettes are formed using garlands and clusters of smaller blossoms and flowers. The ochre tones used represent an older tradition of Sarouk weaving pre-dating the painted ‘American Sarouks’ of the Deco Period. These later pieces were painted a rose-red to gain favor in the emerging American market of that time.
