About the Item

Pulling tribal inspirations from Persian Qashqai carpets, this hand-knotted rug, woven in rich green, red, indigo, and cream wool, measures 4’1”x 5’10” and belongs to the Orley Shabahang Tribal Collection. With a jagged and rudimentary interior field, the design is a tribal interpretation of a Persian flower garden. The bold contrast between the red, indigo and green tones provides the perfect background for small tribal-inspired floral motifs to pop. Enclosing the field, a repetitive and geometric border composed of tribal motifs surrounds the garden, acting as the garden's exterior walkway. Orley Shabahang continues the traditional weaving process by working with weavers, house to house, village to village, to preserve the art of weaving as a cottage industry and implement these traditional methods to create the heirlooms of the future.
