About the Item

78683 Antique Persian Sarouk Farahan Rug, 04'00 x 06'05. A Sarouk rug, also spelled Saruk or Sarough, hails from Iran's Markazi Province. Meticulously crafted in the village of Saruk, the city of Arak, and the surrounding countryside, these rugs are characterized by intricate floral patterns. Typically, they feature a central medallion design, surrounded by floral motifs and intricate vine scrolls. Known for their symmetrical designs, Sarouk rugs exhibit a harmonious balance of colors and patterns. Embark on a captivating journey through time and tradition with this meticulously hand-knotted wool antique Persian Sarouk Farahan rug, a testament to the artistry of ancient carpet designs. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Sarouk, a weaving region renowned for its high-quality, artistically distinctive carpets since the 19th century. This Farahan Sarouk rug, reminiscent of the first designs woven between 1890 and WWI, unfolds a tapestry of ancient enchantments before your eyes. The intricate, curvilinear floral motifs seamlessly blend with a bold earthy color palette, creating a harmonious equilibrium that transports you to a realm of woven wonders. At its heart lies a mesmerizing round cusped navy blue medallion, radiating with timeless charm and anchored by trefoil pendants and surrounded by a naturalistic display of botanicals. The biophilic artistry extends to an alluring allover pattern featuring stylized florals, serrated leaves, peonies, lilies, and thin angular stems, gracefully set against an abrased ivory-beige backdrop that bears the marks of its storied past. Elaborate dark pink corner spandrels complement the medallion's design, trimmed with a acanthus edging seamlessly merging into the composition. The Sarouk Farahan rug is framed with a floral and rosette border, enclosed by both sawtooth and meandering boteh guard borders, echoing the diverse regional traditions of Sarouk weaving. As you trace the patterns with your fingers, you'll feel the visual complexity and vibrancy of the colors, creating an beguiling juxtaposition within the naturalistic elements. This antique Persian masterpiece is not merely a floor covering; it's a statement piece that captivates your senses with layers of joy. In the spirit of the historical evolution of Sarouk carpets, this antique Persian rug echoes the sophistication of the early designs, ensuring a timeless and enduring aesthetic that transcends the boundaries of time and style. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
