About the Item

With a thick pile, this hand knotted Gabbeh carpet measures 2’8” x 3’10” and belongs to the Orley Shabahang World Market collection. Woven in Iran, the carpet utilizes a Persian weaving technique, which means the carpet’s pile is plush while also providing a durable and functional foundation. The rich red, gold, pink, and green tones come from organic vegetable dyes that produce bright yet subtle, fade-resistant tones. Gabbeh designs typically depict the surroundings from the artist's point of view. This artisan chose to showcase a mountain along with sheep grazing in a field as the primary motifs in this carpet. The neutral shades of brown, cream, and grey wool were derived from natural shades of yarn, and the beautiful striations are from the hand-spun wool, which combines multiple strands of wool fiber. Orley Shabahang works house to house, village to village with our weavers, working to preserve the art of weaving as a cottage industry, and implementing ancient weaving methods to create the antiques of the future.
