About the Item

Unique Tabriz Wool and Silk Rug, Salmon-Colored, circa 1980s This Tabriz rug was hand-knotted in northwestern Iran, in the artisanal city of the same name, Tabriz. Only high-quality wool and natural silk were used. With its patterns and decorative elements, it reflects the Orient at its finest. Let a work of art enter your home: a true highlight for you and your guests. The Raj number of these rugs indicates the number of knots per 7 cm in length. For example, a Tabriz 50 Raj has roughly 500,000 knots per m², while a 70 Raj has approximately 1,000,000 knots per m². Tabriz is one of the largest cities in Iran and one of the most famous origins of Persian rugs. Tabriz rugs are often specified with a "Raj" number. The higher this number, the finer the rug, as it indicates the knot density. There are both average (40 Raj) and exceptionally fine (80 Raj) Persian carpets from Tabriz. Traditionally hand-knotted carpets still represent the highest quality standard among all carpet types. Depending on the knot type, the carpets are extremely robust and can last for generations. The finer and tighter a carpet is knotted, the more detailed ornaments and patterns can be displayed in the pile. At the same time, a very fine oriental carpet requires significantly more manual effort, as well as a higher level of experience and skill on the part of the weaver. Thus, knot density also serves as a key value factor for hand-knotted carpets. The quality is not directly related to knot density. A rather coarse carpet may well be manufactured to an excellent standard.
