Vintage Semi Antique Large Tribal Yomud, circa 1950

About the Item

Woven in Golestan province , far north Iran adjoining Turkmenistan, by a female weaver, circa 1950. Members of the semi-nomadic Yomud tribe have resided here for centuries. This is a very high quality example of tribal weaving from this era. The wool and warp are both of wool, uncommonly enough, an indication of its tribal origin . The dyes are natural. What makes this piece stand out -apart from its atypically larger format – are the powerful borders, both outer and inner , the work of a very assured “ weaver as designer “ . The “etched on” quality of the symbols give the overall composition a powerful appearance. The wool quality and overall condition are excellent. Note please the fine needle point work in the narrower borders.
