Vintage Silk Foundation Isfahan Rug

About the Item

Designs found in contemporary rugs from Isfahan in central Iran are based on those seen during the Safavid period (1501 - 1736 AD). The most popular pattern has a central circular medallion on an elegantly sculpted field filled with swirling floral vinery . Kork wool, considered amongst the best, is used for the pile which is close cropped. The foundations are often silk, which enables the weaver to utilize a higher knot count, providing greater detail to the elements. This example has an ascending shrub pattern in a vinery lattice on an ivory field within a slate border. 529 knots per square inch. 5' 5" x 3' 6".
