A "rya" is a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches. They were made using a form of the Ghiordes knot to create double-sided velvet fabric. While "rya" translates to "carpet" in English, its original meaning in Sweden was a bedspread with a knotted pile. The earliest ryas emerged in the early 15th century as large, heavy blankets used by sailors instead of furs. Over time, they evolved to become lighter and more colorful, providing insulation against the cold Scandinavian climate. Ryas are knotted pile carpets, with each knot consisting of three strands of wool, allowing the rug to display a rich texture of various color shades. The name comes from a village in southwest Sweden. The term "rya" can also refer to a breed of sheep whose wool is used to make rya carpets.
