Kirman Rugs and Carpets

KIRMAN STYLE

Antique and vintage Kirman rugs and carpets are named for the southern Iranian city that has been a renowned major center of high-quality carpet production since the 16th century. These furnishings are considered works of art and are celebrated for their fine craftsmanship, sumptuous colors and durability.

This type of Persian carpet is sometimes spelled Kerman, like its place of origin, the capital of the Western Asian country’s Kerman Province. Iran encompasses different cultures, languages and dialects, and its exquisite rugs reflect this diversity.

The different types of Persian carpets are named for the towns, villages and regions where they’re made. Kirman rugs, carpets, wall hangings and other textiles have long been popular with international audiences, including in the early 20th century when they were marketed as Kermanshah carpets. Compared to other Persian rugs, Kirman examples are known for being vividly colored with natural dyes and characterized by a diverse variety of patterns, ranging from arabesques embedded with floral touches and details like deer and lions to overlapping cartouches in a broad palette of rich hues.

Others feature an ornate central medallion, vase shapes, rows of shrubs or a flourishing tree of life created through an asymmetrical knotting technique so that the wool pile on cotton is “double warped.” Some of the more elaborate carpets commissioned from the Kirman workshops in the 18th and 19th centuries included large-scale naturalistic scenes based on European paintings or Gobelin tapestries.

The major workshops of Kerman informed weaving in nearby rural areas such as those created by the Afshar tribe. The international popularity of Kirman carpets, meanwhile, inspired designers across the globe, such as William Morris in England. A leading designer of the Arts and Crafts movement, Morris revived historical techniques such as printed fabrics in the furnishings he created. He owned Kirman carpets and used them as a source for his work.

Both vintage and contemporary rugs influenced by Kirman designs remain in demand for their lavish palette and distinctive patterns. In 2013, a 17th-century Kirman carpet was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for an astounding $33.8 million.

The Collector’s Choice: Late 19th Century Persian Lavar Kerman Palace Rug
Located in Dallas, TX
77622 Rare Late 19th Century Antique Persian Lavar Kerman Rug, 14'00 x 20'02. From the heart of Kerman’s most celebrated weaving ateliers comes this Late 19th Century Persian Lavar Kerman rug, a true connoisseur’s treasure embodying the opulence and refinement of Imperial Persia. Woven in hand-spun wool with masterful precision, its delicate boteh design unfurls across the field in a mesmerizing choreography of form and meaning. This is no ordinary textile — it is an heirloom of Persian aristocracy, saturated with symbolism, grace, and the enduring elegance of a bygone age. The all-over boteh lattice, each paisley motif unfurling like a sprout, a flame, or a tear-shaped cypress, is at once ornamental and deeply symbolic. Long revered as an emblem of life, regeneration, and eternal growth, the boteh becomes a meditation on continuity, mirrored here in infinite repetition. Interlaced with scrolling arabesques, stylized blossoms, and weather-softened abrash striations, the composition radiates a lyrical quality — as though the rug itself breathes with the rhythms of nature. Time has only heightened its beauty, the muted palette of soft blues, faded crimsons, and parchment tones blending into a patina that whispers of centuries past. Framing this exquisite field is an enchanting millefleur cypress tree border, harmoniously flanked by layers of floral guard bands. Each delicate detail serves as a botanical manuscript, a woven garden brimming with symbolic depth. Subtle cartouche inscriptions in Kufic calligraphy further authenticate its noble provenance, elevating this Lavar Kerman beyond the decorative into the realm of cultural artifact. Every knot tells a story of devotion, artistry, and the relentless pursuit of beauty. For the refined collector, this one-of-a-kind antique Lavar Kerman rug is more than an adornment — it is a legacy of craftsmanship and Persian cultural philosophy. With its combination of intricate detail, symbolic resonance, and time-softened palette, it brings a level of sophistication that transforms interiors into sanctuaries of art and heritage. To acquire such a piece is to embrace not only its material splendor but also its role as a living testament of Persian history, destined to anchor the most prestigious collections and residences in timeless grandeur. Rendered in burgundy, navy blue, wine, cerulean, rose, royal blue, pink, mauve, cornflower blue, tan, sand, ecru, greige, gray, taupe, maroon, and brown with other accent colors. Distressed. Desirable Age Wear. Abrash. Antique Wash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 14'00 x 20'02. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 14 x 20 Rug...
