Antique Anatolian Oushak Rug, Late 19th Century

About the Item

Antique Anatolian Turkish Oushak Rug, Late 19th Century Ushak, a town in western Anatolia, has been a major weaving center since at least the 16th century. Local Ottoman workshops wove some of the finest carpets of the classical age, with production continuing well into the 19th century. At the turn of the century, Ushak weavers increasingly took commissions from European firms and often wove pieces for export. They wove these export rugs using soft colors and a thick lustrous weave. Hence, the French spelling–“Oushak”– is often preferred to describe carpets of this epoch. This piece is intriguing for its use of classical and contemporaneous elements in a new and novel way. At the very center, an eight-pointed star of the type known from classical Ottoman weaving is drawn flanked by large neoclassical finials against a cream ground. The corner pieces draw naive but naturalistic leaves in a European manner. The border renders another unusual motif, the so-called ‘scorpion’ drawing seen in a select group of Selendi weavings, often known from Church collections preserved in Transylvania.
