Antique Ghiordes Prayer Rug Western Anatolian Turkish Mihrab Carpet Rare Design
About the Item
This is an antique prayer ( mihrab ) rug from the Western Anatolia, Ghiordes ( Gördes ) region with a very rare and beautiful color composition.
Ghiordes rugs, also known as Gordes prayer rugs or Ghiordes mats, are a type of handwoven prayer rug that originated in the town of Ghiordes (also spelled Gordes or Gördes) in western Turkey. Ghiordes is renowned for its long history of rug weaving and is considered one of the major centers for prayer rug production.
Ghiordes prayer rugs are characterized by their distinctive design and structure. They typically feature a prayer niche, also known as a mihrab, at one end of the rug. The mihrab is an arched shape that represents the direction of Mecca, which is the focal point for prayer in Islam. The rest of the rug is often adorned with geometric motifs, floral patterns, and decorative borders.
These rugs are traditionally woven using the Turkish knot technique, which creates a dense pile and contributes to their durability. The materials used in Ghiordes prayer rugs can include high-quality wool or sometimes a combination of wool and silk. The colors tend to be rich and vibrant, with shades of red, blue, green, and ivory being common.
