Antique Khotan Rug, Early 19th Century

About the Item

Antique Khotan Rug, Early 19th Century Woven in the Silk Road oasis town of Khotan, this piece mirrors the region from which it hails. A classic East Turkestan arrangement of pomegranates in vases is drawn against an ivory ground. This ivory coloration is rarer than the more typical red ground variant. In the border, the central band is composed of fret-work derived from Chinese weaving, as is the outer border’s colorful rendition of abstracted ‘magic mountains’. The rosettes of the innermost border are a local adaptation of Central Asian ornament. Additional Information: Dimensions: 7'0" W x 12'5" L Origin: East Turkestan Period: Early 19th Century

    Located in San Francisco, CA
Antique Persian Heriz Rug, 19th Century Heriz rugs and carpets were woven in Northwest Persia starting in the mid 19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were not rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic which remains popular to this day. This rug has a finer weave (higher knot density) than most of its type, which enabled the weavers to render a much more intricate design. Ivory backgrounds are a rarity and often serve to highlight the range of colors. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century. What was once one of the least expensive...
