Antique Turkish Anatolian Kilim of Matrimony Mounted on Display
About the Item
An antique Eastern Turkish wool kilim rug from Anatolia region circa 19th century. The finely woven rug is professionally mounted on a linen-backed canvas for display. The tribal weaving features three stacked hexagons in the center field with stepped border outline, further surrounded by an outer band of Ram's Horn symbol. One end of the rug has small fringes while the other has larger tassels. The rug showcases several symbols found in the Anatolian weaving. The dominant and repetitive symbol that filled the three hexagons is a regional variation of Hair Band (Sacbagi). The motif indicates the woman's desire to get married. In the dark field surrounding the stacked hexagons, there are two various symbols for Love and Unison (Ask ve Birlesim), a motif that represents the harmony between a man and a woman. The S branched-hook symbol is Wolf's Mouth (Kurt Agzi), which indicates solidarity and protection. The outer band is made of motifs of Ram's Horn known as Kocboynuzu, which is a symbol of fertility, heroism, power and masculinity. These symbols altogether suggest that the rug was likely woven by a maiden who wished or was about to get married. It was possible woven a wedding dowry. The rug itself measures 66" x 40".
The rug is currently mounted on a linen canvas for display but could be taken off for easier and more economical shipping upon request.
