The highly effective use of negative space in the bold red field ensures the elegant foliage and linear shapes of the piece take center stage. Each corner spandrel is adorned with angular compartments and a center trefoil filled with three cypress trees symbolizing eternity, also known as the tree of life. It is enclosed with a stepped ziggurat pyramid border. The inner cartouche guard band displays inscriptions of Kufic calligraphy.
