Mid-Century Anatolian Silk Accent Rug
About the Item
Anatolia, the western region of Turkey, has a long-standing rug-weaving tradition, dating at least as far back as the 13th Century. As the explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘Here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets, and in the most beautiful colours.’ These carpets, among the first to reach the European market in the Early Modern era, can be spotted in many of the paintings of the Old Masters, including those of Holbein, Vermeer, and Reubens.
This charming mid-century example, woven with lustrous silk, features a design inspired by Classical weavings of the 17th Century, rather than the conventional designs of its era. It employs a series of stamped palmettes, creatively repeated in a variety of earthy tones, including red ochre, sage green, terracotta, ivory and muted indigo, framed by a wide border. A bold, striking composition, especially in relation to this piece's smaller format.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders well preserved on all sides.
A handsome accent piece, to add character and charm to any setting.

- 19th Century Oushak Accent RugLocated in London, GBThe weaving workshops of Western Anatolia, where Oushak carpets such as this piece were originally made, have a rich history, stretching back at least as far as the Early Modern era – as the 14th Century explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets in the world, and with the most beautiful colours.’ During the 19th Century, these pieces were highly sought after in the West, inspiring many of the designs of European weavings of the period, and can be found in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe. This late-19th Century Oushak rug boasts a charming, warm colour palette, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, with saffron, salmon, and ivory tones over a light terracotta ground. - Mid-20th Century Handmade Turkish Anatolian Accent RugLocated in New York, NYA vintage Turkish Anatolian accent rug handmade during the mid-20th century. Measures: 3' 6" x 6' 7" Turkish rugs & carpets: Until the Great Persian Carpet Revival in the later 19th century, the “Oriental rug” was Turkish. For nearly six centuries, Turkish rugs, both scatter, room size, and even larger, thoroughly dominated the European import market. Whereas the Persian carpet can be divided into urban, village, and tribal types, in Turkey and its predecessor the Ottoman Empire, rugs almost exclusively came from village weavers and from a small number of urban workshops. Ninety percent village, nine percent city, one percent tribal. Turkish weavers have, with very few exceptions, always worked with the symmetric (Turkish) knot. Wool foundations are standard practice among both town and village weavers. The exceptions, very finely woven 20th century and recent Herekeh silks from near Istanbul, and early 17th century Ottoman Court rugs from Bursa, constitute only a tiny part of the total. Always pricey, they appealed and still appeal to the clients who want lots of knots and perfect execution instead of individual personality. The urban workshops have been centered around the western Turkish city of Oushak and its attendant port town of Smyrna. Oushak weaves with the trends in fashion. When color saturated medallion carpets were needed, Oushak was ready in the 17th and 18th centuries. When coarse red and blue carpets...Category
