Vintage Turkish Wool Floor Rug in Beige and Dark Brown Stripes

About the Item

This vintage handwoven Anatolian Tulu wool floor rug features an abstract, Minimalist design with an open oatmeal tan field and dark brown stripes and border edge. The medium wool pile is finished with a natural cotton warp fringe to both ends. This authentic tribal rug makes a bold statement and is a beautiful example of artisan craftsmanship infused with traditional character. The strikingly modern abstract aesthetic pairs well with any style of decor from rustic antique, boho and vintage Midcentury to contemporary. Tulu is the English pronunciation for the Turkish word, 'tüylü' meaning hairy. The technique used for weaving is very similar to 'gabbeh' in Iran and 'Beni Ourain' rugs of Morrocco. Tulu carpets have been traditionally woven in Karapinar which is to the east of Konya, Turkey. This region is a half-desert like plain and to the north there are barren mountains where winters are harsh and summers are hot. Villagers used Tulu rugs as floor coverings, as bed clothes, as blankets or wall hangings during cold winters. They moved to the mountains in the north with their sheep and goats during the summer to avoid the extreme heat. Tulu rugs were produced for functional purposes rather than commercial. The weaving is more coarse so they can be woven faster at home compared to sophisticated Fine rugs that can only be woven from a pattern in workshops. They generally have 'Primitive' designs and use undyed hand-spun wool of few colors. The timeless design of this unique rug will complement any style of contemporary decor, from mid century modern and southwest to boho and global. Moroccan Berber rugs are handwoven by women artisans from the Berber tribes of the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Berber tribal rugs are one-of-a-kind pieces, woven from naturally dyed and undyed sheep’s wool. Lacking a written language, ancient Berber weavers would incorporate ancestral myths into their textiles using abstract images and symbols. This magic symbolism and a minimalist design give these Berber carpets their unique and timeless appeal.
