About the Item
Handwoven in wool, this rare 5x8 antique Bessarabian kilim rug is believed to originate from Romania circa 1850-1860. Its design features a wide beige border around a rich chocolate brown field, with floral patterns in soft colors.
On the design:
This piece is among the oldest Bessarabian flatweaves we’ve curated from the mid-19th century, and extremely collectible therein. Its floral patterns enjoy a particular beauty in the deft use of pink, gold and green tones they host. There’s such an intelligent approach to that thoughtful play of gentle patterns with equally gentle transitions in color here. It’s a subtle detail, and a feat of handweaving among transitional rugs of this gorgeous, whimsical rustic charm.
Condition:
This antique Bessarabian rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin. It’s ready for the floor, and is ideal for wall-hanging projects, too.
