Antique French Aubusson Rug 8'6 x 13'8
About the Item
An antique circa 1850 French Aubusson rug 8'6x13'8. The central ivory medallion with wonderfully detailed floral emblems sits on a green field enclosed by a wonderful encroaching border. The Aubusson workshops, on the river Creuse in France, are famous for their antique European rugs, carpets and tapestries, woven since the 18th century. The Royal Council established a carpet factory there in 1743 and its production, both wall tapestries and flatwoven and pile rugs, was quickly taken up by the French aristocracy and by export markets as well.

- Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'Located in New York, NYAntique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...Category

The Aubusson carpets of the second Empire period are often more elaborate and accomplished than their 18th century predecessors. The richness and complexity of ornaments is almost indescribable. The field here is strong rust nearly red and the border is dark blue. The ivory bouquet sub medallion is ringed by eight oval panels formed by three dimensional rococo shells. In turn this is tied to circular bands of violets and a rose chain.
