Massive Antique French Palace Size Aubusson Rug 19'9x49'

About the Item

Massive antique French Palace size Aubusson rug, 19'9 x 49'. Now this is a special rug! Clearly it was a special commission when new. The room for it must have been 25 x 54 or so. The original owner was almost surely a nobleman or member of the highest French social classes. An enormous ivory central ellipse closely fills the rich wine field with giant arrow corners embracing bouquets and arabesques. The border as on so many Aubusson s resembles a giltwood picture frame. The carpet is in top condition hardly ever having been used. Of course the space for this magnificent work is rare and not many places with salons of the size required are being built today but someone somewhere out there needs this carpet.

  • Antique French Aubusson Rug, circa 1890, 8' x 9'
    Located in New York, NY
Antique French Aubusson rug, circa 1890. Aubusson carpets are pile less and tapestry woven from that town to the southwest of Paris, by a group of independent weavers working under Royal or State protection. The designs are strictly classical, neoclassical or Victorian. They are virtually never “oriental”. The pattern wefts are wool with silk and/or metal thread for details in the more finely woven examples. Sizes tend toward the squarish and pieces 30’ by 30’ are not unknown. The 18th-19th century French clients included the nobility and haute bourgeoisie. Aubusson carpets were also exported to England and are often to be found in country houses. Light colors are the most popular and dark toned pieces are very rare. Besides traditional Louis furniture...

Oversize antique French Aubusson rug 15'5 x 18'. The Aubusson carpets of the second Empire period are often more elaborate and accomplished than their 18th century predecessors. The richness and complexity of ornaments is almost indescribable. The field here is strong rust nearly red and the border is dark blue. The ivory bouquet sub medallion is ringed by eight oval panels formed by three dimensional rococo shells. In turn this is tied to circular bands of violets and a rose chain. Complex floral swag garlands nearly cover the red spaces between medium blue spandrels with huge scrolls transition to the over scale bouquets latticed pendants...
