Antique Savonnerie rug with Blue Open Field and Gold Patterns

About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool and originating from Spain circa 1900-1920, this antique 14x15 Savonnerie rug is a rare curation in the Antique & Vintage Collection. On the Design: This rug enjoys a variety of rare traits, including both its open field design and its rounded corners. These very particular elements may allude to it being a commission for European aristocracy—as do its masterful details and regal play of saturated royal blue with gold accents in the beige-brown floral patterns. Connoisseurs and keen eyes may further note its innermost border is a cartouche, seldom seen in this large scale and open field style. This is a masterpiece among the few transitional rugs of its kind, and an extremely collectible choice in its many unique elements as much as its outstanding beauty. Condition: This antique Savonnerie rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

Antique Savonnerie Rug Size: 12'10" × 21'3" (391 × 647 cm) A mid 19th century Savonnerie antique rug, the finely-striped black field with an allover-design of overblown curving leaves and delicate floral sprays around a central medallion within a lush cream border with vases and flowery bouquets. The Savonnerie European Rugs factory, located on the site of the present Musee d’Art Moderne, inherited its name from the soap making factory it took over at the behest of Louis XIII. From 1660 until 1743 Savonnerie was a manufacture royale, carrying out commissions for French Savonnerie rugs and carpets specifically designed for the Royal Palaces. In the 1770’s, the tapestry looms at Aubusson in the Creuze Valley near Limoges were converted to produce flat-woven rugs for sale and carpets under royal warrant. No one knows precisely when European rugs weaving began in this area, but it is certain that tapestries were first woven there long before the Gothic era.
