Arts & Crafts Fragment Rug by Gavin Morton

About the Item

Early 20th century Arts & Crafts fragment rug by Gavin Morton Size: 3'3" × 8'4" (100 × 256 cm) Arts & Crafts stood against the decline in quality of machine made goods and this vintage rug reflects the greatest ideals of the movement. Nothing about it is negligent or mediocre. The pile is made of qualitative wool and the hand knot is firm and precise. They constitute a basis for delicate, natural design of flowery motifs, largely inspired with Japanese aesthetics. A subtle color palette comprises of pastel tones of dusty pink, blue and taupe. This Arts & Crafts rug exudes serenity and tranquility. It will adorn and enlighten any interior with its soothing presence. British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain.
