Large Arts & Crafts Rug by Gavin Morton re-sized

About the Item

Large Arts & Crafts Rug by Gavin Morton ‘size adjusted’ Size: 13'0" × 19'0" (396 × 579 cm) A large hand-knotted wool rug from the early 20th century, in excellent condition. This is a rare Gavin Morton piece with a plush pile and quintessential Art & Crafts design. The composition is symmetrical, with a central angular medallion and large stylized wisteria flowers and other tree blossoms scattered throughout a camel field. A green border and thinner borders abundant in floral elements frame the composition. The color pallete is restrained, in pewter-grey, charcoal, and a warm colored background. British artist Gavin Morton (1867–1954) is perhaps best known for his work as head of the design department for Morton & Co, a Scotland based textile company founded by his uncle Alexander Morton. Over time, Morton & Co aligned itself with the rising Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain.
