About the Item

One-of-a-kind Antique Floral Needlework Carpet Size: 7'2" × 7'5" (218 × 226 cm) This antique needlepoint rug is a rare treat for the connoisseurs of traditional art and craft. Its body is composed of hundreds of thousands of stitches made using a sewing needle and wool yarn on an open grid cotton fabric called a “canvas”. Although needlepoint rugs are pile-less, this method of execution results an intriguing texture which you can feel under your fingers. This early 20th-century needlepoint rug has an oatmeal field carrying two rows of enlarged leafy floral bouquets, each within a subtle ivory lacy oval frame. Although made a hundred years ago, the antique rug remains in perfect condition until this day thanks to high-quality materials and thorough manual execution. If properly maintained, it will withstand years of usage showing no signs of wear. Rich in heritage and artistry, this handmade rug exemplifies the high standards of Doris Leslie Blau’s curated pieces. With a wide range of prices, Doris Leslie Blau makes exceptional rugs accessible to collectors and designers alike.

During the early seventeenth century, a weaver named Pierre DuPont travelled to the Levant. Upon his return, he claimed to have discovered the technique of creating Turkish rugs. Oriental rugs were extremely expensive during Bourbon times, and a French manufactory that could create the same type of rug would lower the price significantly. Henri VI of France–the reigning monarch at the time–took advantage of DuPont’s skills and established a workshop for him at the Louvre. In 1627, King Louis XIII founded a manufactory for DuPont and his apprentice, Simon Lourdes, on the site of a defunct soap factory in the sixteenth arrondissement (also known as Quai de Chaillot). The name “Savonnerie” was born from the French word “Savon” meaning “soap.” DuPont and Lourdes worked together, weaving rugs under a royal patent for the king and other nobles until they had a falling out and split up. Lourdes remained at the Chaillot location while DuPont went to his workshops in the Louvre, though both continued to make Savonnerie rugs.
