About the Item

Authentic Savonnerie Handmade Wool Rug Size: 24'0" × 29'10" (731 × 909 cm) This turn of the century antique French Savonnerie rug features an oval central medallion outlined in dark brown and surrounded by delicate floral motifs and curving vine details against a field of gold. A thin brown border completes the look of the antique carpet. European Rugs are pile rugs that have been made in the Manufacture Nationale de la Savonnerie, a carpet weaving workshop established by Pierre Dupont in the 17th century. Due to the fine quality of the rugs produced there, high-grade commercial antique rugs from other manufacturers are often called Savonneries. Woven on vertical looms with symmetric knots, the rugs were often produced by court artists for special commissions or for royal palaces and state gifts. In 1825, the workshops of Savonnerie were moved to Gobelins. Savonnerie designs often included military, heraldic, architectural or floral motifs. Showcasing the finest materials and patterns, this design is part of the expansive Doris Leslie Blau collection, renowned for its rare and unique finds across a wide range of prices.
