About the Item

-Wool rug after Francis Picabia (France, 1879 – 1953), “Égoïsme” 1950 -Measures: 210 x 150 cm; 6.9 x 4.9 ft -Signed lower centre; signed and inscribed with “hors commerce” on verso. -Edition and publisher are unknown. The rug was made after the original oil painting by Francis Picabia in 1947-1950, which is now in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. Surrealism is often associated with illusionist paintings depicting an impossible reality. But surrealism is above all a way of life based upon absolute freedom of the mind. Picabia is an example of someone who lived such a life. After meeting Duchamp he began to make ‘mecanomorphic’ works; thereafter he changed his style regularly and was both for and against surrealism. And “Égoïsme”, is a masterpiece of Francis Picabia’s late abstract practice.
