This sublimely beautiful antique rug, a Bessarabian Kilim from nineteenth century Romania, is a positively lovely piece of work to behold. Antique Bessarabian tapestry rugs or kilims like this especially lovely example are famed and sought after the world over for their sweeping and charming naturalistic patterns of sumptuous floral garlands and bouquets. Because of these characteristics, these rugs may resemble Armenian Karabagh pile carpet, which often feature similar design styles. Ultimately, Bessarabian Kilims like this rug reflect the realistic design tradition of Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, although they generally feature a more free-flowing, less structured layout which is in turn more evocative of the natural world. Here, the softly colored flowers are projected against a gorgeously variegated green ground redolent of life and lushness. This carpet is a veritable primavera of interior decor, and is truly a masterpiece of Bessarabian Kilim rugs.
